Thoughts - Who am I? Does my life makes sense?

Every human being in his life asks these unavoidable questions. Confronting who we really are, we feel vulnerable and exposed. Faced with the doubts that arise, the artist questions his social role, with introspection and self-inventory being part of the process.

The contemporary artist juggles with ideas and concepts, hoping to initiate a process of reflection. But what is the place of our emotions, so personal and idiosyncratic? How do we find room for our emotions in this world so obsessed with productivity, where we are over-organized to improve our economical performances and where we feel the pressures mounting constantly? How does an individual achieves recognition as a simple human being and not as a performing machine? Under all this pressure there is a lot of pain. It is my nature as a human being to feel that pain; it is my role as an artist to reflect it.

Process

I chose to use photocopies : an instant photo process that suited the urgency of my search to illuminate these questions. There was no choice but to use black and white as the process required bringing shadow into light. I tried to execute the work as spontaneously as possible without artifice, concentrating only on revealing the naked truth of my emotions. Note that the camera, with its black box and play of mirrors captures and sends an image in the same manner that our brain registers a vision and our environment and conditioning reflect it as mirrors. By a pathway not unlike the stations of the cross, I hope to elicit reflections and emotional responses as the human artist and the human viewer find themselves, together, exposed.
